Roanoke Rapids Day Lake ParkDominion Resources as a part of its Roanoke Rapids Lake Hydro-Power license has developed an outstanding 17 acre lake front recreation area at the western end of the Roanoke Canal Trail.  This beautiful facility provides 100 persons lake and 40 persons lake front picnic shelters, a modular playground unit, sand volley ball, a swimming beach, a nine whole Frisbee golf course, horseshoes, fishing pier, and a beautiful wooded ½ mile nature and fitness loop trail with excellent views of Roanoke Rapids Lake.  The City of Roanoke Rapids is a partner in the project and has provided grant resources that helped to construct the facility.

The area is a great place to start a hike on the Canal Trail, fish, have a picnic or just relax and view a beautiful lake.  Bald Eagles, ducks, osprey, deer, and even sea gulls have been seen in this area. The more adventurous can choose to start at the lake and hike or bike the 7+ miles to the beautiful River Falls Park in Weldon. Along the way they can see the old power bulkhead, Canal Museum, Aqueduct, and other historic and natural “jewels” along the way.

River Falls Park

River Falls ParkRiver Falls Park in Weldon, North Carolina is located alongside the Roanoke River at the NC Wildlife Resource Commission Boat Landing. The park is also the eastern terminus for the 7-1/2 mile trail that spans from Weldon to Roanoke Rapids Lake, linking the two communities together.  Due to its proximity to major highways, many tourists visit the sight for its scenic views and natural park setting.  Kayakers and canoeists travel hours to spend the day maneuvering the rapids located in this section of the Roanoke River.

Every year during the months of March, April and May, thousands of fishermen flock to Weldon to try their hand at catching Striped Bass, also known a “Rockfish.”  The Town of Weldon holds its annual Weldon Independence Day Celebration the first Saturday of July in the park showcasing a fireworks display.  In August, the annual Ducky Derby sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce is also held in River Falls Park.  Both events draw thousands of people to the park.

In 2003, River Falls Park received a much needed facelift with the help of a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant.  These improvements included picnic shelters, a playground, fitness stations, restroom facilities and a walking trail.  The park is an ideal facility for many outdoor activities and occasions.  The large picnic shelter may be reserved for birthday parties, small family reunions or cookouts.  You may contact the Weldon Town Hall at (252) 536-4836 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
