Educational Tours

The Roanoke Canal Museum and Trail offers guided educational tours Tuesday through Saturday starting as early as 9:00 a.m.  Reservations are required and filled on a first-come basis.  Three guided tours are now available:

Museum Tour of the Middle Locks and Powerhouse

This is a general museum tour where students learn about the history and many uses of the Roanoke Navigation Canal from 1810 to 1940.  The tour includes an outside lecture describing many of the canal’s features, a short video inside, and time for the students to explore the museum’s exhibits.  The tour takes 1 hour.

Walking Tour of Weldon and the Aqueduct

The Roanoke Navigation Canal’s east terminus was located at Weldon and was the reason why a town originated there.  Soon afterward, Weldon became a major hub of commerce for both river and rail traffic.  The tour is a 1.25 mile hike from River Falls Park in Weldon to the aqueduct, the latter being one of the most dominant and interesting architectural features on the canal.  The tour lasts one hour and fifteen minutes.

Nature Hike

Historic interpreters lead classes along the trail from the museum to the Power Canal overlook and back.  Along the way, several stops are made to talk about various natural aspects according to the time of year.  Deer, cardinals, and eagles are only a few animals that are commonly observed from the trail.  The hike is one mile long and requires one hour.

Group Tour Frequently Asked Questions

Class size: Because of the nature of the trail and museum, groups with more than 20 participants will be divided into smaller tours each lead simultaneously by a historic interpreter.

Accessibility: All tours follow fully accessible portions of the trail and historic site.  Please be aware, however, that the trail is packed earth and the hikes are a minimum of one mile long.  Please tell the staff at the time of reservation if your class has any wheelchair bound students or others with walking concerns.  Extra time and assistance will be provided.

Picnic Facilities: Before or after tours, your class is welcome to use the picnic area at the museum or either park at the trailheads.  All three have full restroom facilities and drinking fountains.

Bus Parking: Parking is available at all starting locations.  For larger groups – especially those taking the Weldon and Aqueduct tour – the drop off and pick-up points are at different locations.  Ask for directions at the time of reservation.

Group Tour Pricing: All tours cost $2.00 per person (drivers are complimentary).  The museum accepts checks and cash only.  The museum can also invoice your institution.

Traveling Presentations:  Staff from the Roanoke Canal Museum and Trail can also visit your class room or organization. Call for availability and types of presentations. A small fee may apply.
